Architectural Beauty Under Gray Skies – Asia University in Taichung

On a cloudy weekend of March 15th this year, I stepped onto the campus of Asia University in Taichung. Though the sky lacked the brilliant blue backdrop, this weather condition gave me the perfect opportunity to try out new techniques my photography instructor had taught us: using special filters to enhance the expression and tension in my photos.

The campus was quiet with few students around due to the weekend, creating a peaceful atmosphere that made the buildings stand out even more prominently. The International College with its European castle-inspired architecture caught my eye immediately. Its distinctive dome at the top and classical design elements created an elegant contrast against the gray sky, each architectural detail becoming a perfect subject in my lens.

The Museum of Modern Art, designed by Tadao Ando, was the biggest surprise of my visit. Its unique triangular architecture created a striking contrast with the surrounding environment, resembling a spaceship from the future that had silently landed on campus. Through the magic of filters, I captured the building’s distinctive geometric beauty and futuristic feel, which shone brilliantly even under the overcast light.

This photography experience taught me an important lesson: excellent photography doesn’t always require perfect weather conditions. Sometimes, seemingly less-than-ideal environments can inspire different creative perspectives, resulting in stunning works. The architectural beauty of Asia University, set against the backdrop of cloudy skies, revealed a charm quite different from what one might see on a sunny day.
