On October 26, 2025, I joined the National Geographic photography workshop to Dongju Island. It was the best weather day during our four-day, three-night trip. The sun was bright, the sea breeze was gentle, and it felt like nature had prepared a visual feast just for us.
A Stunning Sight on the Cliffs
When I first saw the fortress built on the cliff, I was deeply moved. It stood quietly on the steep rocks, like a sleeping giant, like a warrior guarding this coast. I couldn’t help but wonder – in those wartime days, how much effort and courage did it take to build such a defense on this dangerous terrain? Time has passed, but it still stands there, witnessing the changes of the years.

Surprises Along the Trail
Walking along the Dongyang Mountain Trail, every turn brought a new surprise. The trail winds upward following the bay’s natural shape, allowing us to see the entire bay from above. The blue water sparkled under the sunlight, and gentle waves hit the giant rocks in the bay, creating beautiful ripples.

The cliffs are covered with uniquely shaped stones, each one like a work of art carved by nature. Even more interesting, we spotted two little goats hiding on the cliff – perhaps they were shy because visitors came by. This added a cute and unexpected moment to our journey.
Small and Grand
From a distance, travelers on the trail looked so small compared to the magnificent cliff scenery. This contrast made me feel the powerful force of nature, and made me treasure every moment of being here even more.
The Dongyang Mountain Trail in Dongju is not just a hiking path – it’s a journey of talking with history and connecting with nature. Those sleeping fortresses, the grand bay, and every scene on the cliffs are now deeply printed in my memory.
