A Quiet Green Space in the City
On February 25, 2025, a Tuesday afternoon, I visited Meiji Shrine in the heart of Tokyo. The weather was clear and comfortable, with gentle sunshine covering the entire shrine grounds. Even though it was a weekday, there were many visitors, but it didn’t feel crowded. About twenty percent of them were travelers from around the world.
The Sacred Gate Made from Taiwan Cypress
After passing through the first torii gate, I saw the most iconic structure of Meiji Shrine – the second torii gate. This is Japan’s largest wooden torii gate, built with cypress wood from Taiwan. Under the sunlight, the wood surface showed its natural, aged character. Simple yet solemn, it reflected the noble spirit of the Imperial family.
Walking Through Light and Shadow
I walked along the wide path lined with tall trees on both sides. They formed a natural green tunnel above me. Sunlight came through the branches and leaves, creating beautiful shadow patterns on the ground. Walking on this tree-lined path, I felt peaceful but also a little excited, as if each step was bringing me closer to something special.
The Royal Symbol of Elegance
Under every lantern at the shrine buildings, I could see the delicate chrysanthemum emblem – the special symbol of the Imperial family. It represents purity and elegance. These small details quietly tell the story of the deep connection between Meiji Shrine and Japan’s royal history.
The Impressive Wall of Sake Barrels
Before leaving, I passed by an impressive “lantern wall.” When I looked closer, I found it was actually made of sake barrels donated by different companies and groups. They call it “Kenjo-shu” (献上酒). From a distance, it looks very impressive. These barrels are not just offerings – they carry the meaning of prayers and gratitude.
Goodbye in Golden Sunlight
When I was ready to leave, the sun was low in the sky. The whole shrine looked like it had been painted with golden color. Everything seemed more noble and special in this light. Under this golden glow, Meiji Shrine showed a different side – solemn yet warm. This visit left me with memories I won’t forget.
